INSECURITY (inspired by BKChatLDN)

The rate at which this show has grown is phenomenal. Essentially, it’s a discussion between ‘real people’ of ‘real topics’, and I love it. But I couldn’t help detecting insecurity in some of the episodes. Although in the context of BKChat, here are some signs that, to me, suggest insecurity in general:

If you have to shout someone down…

I question the value of what you’re saying. It suggests an inadequacy in the content of your speech that has to be made up for in the volume of your voice. You do realise that to bring someone down means you’re already below them, right? If you ever happen to experience a person like this, do not rise to the provocation. Let them act a fool by themselves! Value of content> volume of voice.

If you have to repeatedly assert yourself as something…

(a man, for instance), I can almost bet that you aren’t one. Why? Because actions speak louder than words. It’s almost as though as well as others, you’re also trying to convince yourself that you are what you say you are. But what are your actions saying?? ‘Dyu understand?’ as one of the cast frequently says. Telling a woman, (or anyone for that matter) to ‘shut up because you are speaking’ says more ‘boy’ than ‘man’ material to me. A real man knows how to respect a woman. If someone’s words and actions don’t correlate, question if their words ever meant anything in the first place.

If you are somebody’s sideman…

you are essentially the salad next to the party jollof. It means you lack so much confidence in yourself that you lean on someone else to voice an opinion on your behalf. Rather than the glorification of others, why don’t you invest in the education of yourself?? (for example, investing in your vocabulary is a great place to start, especially if you consider ‘relinquish’ to be a big word.) Stand for yourself, not in the shadow of someone else!

However, I must give credit to the BKChat Cast. Even if it’s not completely accurate, they are stimulating a conversation amongst London youths that needs to be had, so big ups to you guys!

  1. I can’t stand it when they shout someone down. One of the reasons I find it hard to watch the show to the end..
